Getting involved with the Workforce Development Program: a Q&A with Councillor Rebecca Vandepeear

Meet Rebecca Vandepeear, she's a dedicated Councillor representing Ward 1 in the City of Playford which encompasses the Northern Adelaide Plains region. As a member of the Workforce Development Program Steering Committee, she brings her passion for fostering employment opportunities in the Northern Adelaide Plains to the forefront.

We recently chatted to Rebecca about her involvement in the steering committee, what outcomes she hopes to see as part of the program, and her fondness of the Northern Adelaide Plains and its produce. Here's what she had to say:

1. Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Rebecca Vandepeear and I'm a Councillor for Ward 1 in the City of Playford, which encompasses some of the Northern Adelaide Plains region, including the primary production areas of Virginia, Buckland Park, Waterloo Corner, Penfield, Penfield Gardens, and Angle Vale, as well as some suburban areas.

2. What made you want to get involved in the Workforce Development Program?

The Workforce Development Program Steering Committee. (Councillor Rebecca Vandepeear is third from the left)

I see it as an exciting opportunity to build upon the Local Jobs Project and identify some specific actions that can be implemented. While I represent both suburban and rural areas, I'm really passionate about attracting a larger primary production workforce and future investment to our primary industries and to our Northern Adelaide Plains region.

3. What outcomes are you hoping to see as part of the Workforce Development Program?

I'm looking forward to seeing the outcomes of the workforce mapping exercise, which will hopefully bring us some detailed data on the specific workforce opportunities that are out there. Given my efforts in the past to tackle local public transport issues, I'm also hoping we can collectively put a plan into action to get workers to and from our region.

4. What is something that is not widely known about the Northern Adelaide Plains region?

It's amazing how many people I speak to who don't know that our region is the largest protected cropping area in the Southern Hemisphere.

5. What are some of your favourite things from the region?

In terms of produce, I can't go past some locally grown mushrooms and potatoes. There is so much more on offer though!
