Grown on the Adelaide Plains - South Australia's Food Basket

The Northern Adelaide Plains Food Cluster is proud to introduce our exciting regional branding initiative: “Grown on the Adelaide Plains – South Australia’s Food Basket”. Our aim is to showcase stories of the region and shine a light on the diversity and abundance of food it produces.

The food journey

The Adelaide Plains Food Region is right at the beginning of the food journey. The strength of the region is in the abundance and diversity of food that it produces. In the northern part of the region, you'll find grains like wheat, barley, and lentils, as well as livestock such as beef, sheep, chickens, goats and egg producers. To the south, it boasts the largest protected cropping area in the southern hemisphere, yielding tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums, eggplants, lettuce, herbs, native foods and various niche products. In addition, there are fields cultivating cabbages, cauliflowers, olives, olive oil, potatoes, onions, carrots, almonds, pistachio nuts, grapes and wine. In fact, you could argue that your Sunday roast lunch all derives from the Adelaide Plains Food Region.

The heart of diversity

The region's unique strength lies in its cultural diversity among growers, as well as its favourable conditions like rich soil, sunlight, water accessibility and proximity to the Adelaide market, reducing food miles. The produce reaches both national and international markets. The region's crowning glory is its proud and passionate growers who are dedicated to feeding the world.
